What is it?
FemtoLASIK is laser vision correction in which the corneal flap is created by a femtosecond laser instead of a mechanical microkeratome blade. A computer-guided, ultra-precise laser prepares the flap; the cornea underneath is then reshaped to correct your refractive error, and the flap is laid back in place.

FemtoLASIK replaces the mechanical blade with a femtosecond laser, which lowers — but does not eliminate — the risks associated with flap-based laser surgery. Below is what the LERC team discusses in your assessment as part of informed consent — not a substitute for it.
Common and short-term
- Mild irritation or a temporary gritty sensation for a few hours after the procedure — resolves quickly for most patients.
- Dry eye in the first weeks — clinical data associate FemtoLASIK with a lower dry-eye risk than microkeratome LASIK, but it still occurs; managed with lubricating drops.
- Halos or glare around lights at night in the early weeks, improving as the cornea settles.
- Fluctuating vision until full stabilisation, typically within 4–6 weeks.
Rare but serious
- Flap-related complications (displacement, wrinkles, epithelial ingrowth) — less frequent with femtosecond flap creation than with a blade, and usually managed without long-term effect when caught early.
- Under-correction or over-correction requiring an enhancement procedure.
- Infection — very rare; managed with prophylactic antibiotics and sterile single-use instruments.
- Ectasia (progressive corneal weakening) — rare; the corneal-mapping workup screens for this, which is why we never proceed on inadequate corneal thickness.
