Overview

What Ultra LASIK is

Ultra LASIK is suitable for a wider range of corneas than traditional LASIK because the flap is thinner — it preserves more underlying tissue, which matters for thin corneas and high prescriptions. The whole procedure takes around 7 minutes; you spend about 2 hours in the clinic for the work-up, treatment, and short post-op observation.

What is it?

Ultra LASIK is the LERC flagship laser vision-correction procedure. The femtosecond laser creates a precise corneal flap thinner than traditional LASIK, then a second laser reshapes the cornea to correct refractive error. The flap is laid back in place and self-seals.

How it works

Cool ultraviolet light gently removes microscopic amounts of corneal tissue, changing how light focuses on the retina. Most patients see clearly within hours and return to work the next day.

What you can expect

Why Ultra LASIK

Concrete reasons patients choose this over standard LASIK or contact lenses.

  • 01Ultra-thin corneal flap

Suitable for thinner corneas where traditional LASIK is contraindicated.

  • 02Advanced eye-tracking

The laser tracks micro-movements of the eye in real time so the treatment stays centered.

  • 03Same-day discharge

Total in-clinic time is about 2 hours including the diagnostic work-up and post-op observation.

  • 04Quick visual recovery

Most patients see clearly within 24 hours and return to desk work the next day.

  • 05Free post-op follow-ups

    Per current promotional offer.

  • 06Free protective sunglasses

    Per current promotional offer.

The procedure

How the day goes

You arrive in the morning, you go home the same afternoon. Your driver/companion picks you up afterwards.

Total time 7 minutes laser time, ~2 hours in clinic

  1. 1

    Diagnostic work-up

Pupil mapping, corneal topography, and dry-eye assessment. Confirms candidacy on the day if not already established at consultation.

    Duration: 30–45 minutes

  2. 2

    Topical anesthetic

Numbing eye drops only. No injections, no general anesthetic. You stay awake.

    Duration: 5 minutes

  3. 3

    Flap creation

Femtosecond laser creates the ultra-thin corneal flap.

    Duration: ~30 seconds per eye

  4. 4

    Excimer reshaping

Cool ultraviolet laser reshapes the underlying cornea according to your unique corneal map.

    Duration: ~30 seconds per eye

  5. 5

    Flap repositioning

The flap is laid back into place. It self-seals — no stitches.

    Duration: 1 minute

  6. 6

    Post-op observation

Final check, antibiotic eye drops, and same-day discharge with your companion.

    Duration: ~1 hour

Candidacy

Am I a candidate for Ultra LASIK?

A 30-minute candidacy consultation is the only way to know for sure. Below is the typical fit profile.

Typically a fit

  • Aged 21 or older with a stable prescription for at least 12 months
  • Refractive error within Ultra LASIK treatment range
  • Cornea sufficiently thick (confirmed by topography at consultation)
  • Healthy eyes — no active infection, glaucoma, or significant cataract
  • Not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Realistic expectations about outcomes

May not be a fit

  • Significant dry eye that does not respond to treatment
  • Keratoconus or corneal thinning disorders
  • Active autoimmune disease affecting healing
  • Prescription that is changing year-over-year
  • Younger than 21 — refractive error not yet stable

Some patients who are not LASIK candidates ARE candidates for ReLEx SMILE (uses a smaller incision and is gentler on dry eyes). The consultation will discuss alternatives if Ultra LASIK is not a fit.

Risks and informed consent

Every surgery has risks. Here they are honestly.

Ultra LASIK has been performed millions of times worldwide and is among the most studied refractive procedures. That does not mean it is risk-free. Below is what the LERC team will discuss in your candidacy consultation as part of informed consent — not a substitute for it.

Common and short-term

  • Dry eye for the first weeks to months — managed with lubricating drops, usually resolves.
  • Halos, glare, or starbursts around lights at night — most pronounced in the first 1–4 weeks, often improves within months.
  • Mild fluctuating vision in the first few days as the cornea settles.
  • Light sensitivity and a gritty sensation in the first 24–48 hours.

Rare but serious

  • Flap-related complications (displacement, wrinkles, epithelial ingrowth) — uncommon, usually managed without long-term effect when caught early.
  • Persistent dry eye beyond 6–12 months in a small percentage of patients.
  • Under-correction or over-correction requiring an enhancement procedure.
  • Infection (endophthalmitis) — very rare; we use single-use sterile instruments and prophylactic antibiotics.
  • Ectasia (progressive corneal weakening) — rare; the candidacy workup screens for this.

Specific risks for your eyes — based on your prescription, corneal thickness, tear film, and lifestyle — are reviewed in writing before surgery. You sign nothing on the day of the consultation.

Outcomes

What patients can expect

Ultra LASIK targets distance vision. Reading glasses are not addressed by this procedure (presbyopia, which everyone develops with age, is independent of LASIK).

  1. Day of surgery

Functional but blurry; rest your eyes the rest of the day.

  2. Day 1

Most patients pass the post-op driving check.

  3. Week 1

Comfortable for screen work; avoid swimming and contact sports.

Frequently asked

Patient questions

  • No. The procedure is performed under topical anesthetic eye drops only — no injections, no general anesthetic. Most patients describe the sensation as "weird" rather than painful: pressure on the eye for a few seconds during flap creation, then the bright laser light. After the drops wear off there can be a gritty/scratchy sensation for a few hours, controlled by the lubricating drops we send home with you.
  • You cannot drive immediately afterwards — vision is functional but blurry for the first few hours. Most patients are cleared to drive at the Day 1 post-op check.
  • For office/screen work, most patients return on Day 2 or 3. For physically demanding work or work in dusty environments, plan for 5–7 days off and confirm at the post-op check.
  • Ultra LASIK corrects distance vision. Reading vision naturally declines with age (presbyopia, typically from the mid-40s). If you are over 40 and want to reduce dependence on reading glasses too, ask about presbyopia-correcting alternatives at the consultation.
  • The corneal reshaping itself is permanent. However, age-related changes (presbyopia, cataract) happen in everyone over time and are independent of LASIK. A small percentage of patients eventually want a touch-up enhancement.
  • About 20% of patients who consult are not Ultra LASIK candidates — most often because of corneal thickness, dry eye, or unstable prescription. The consultation will explain whether ReLEx SMILE, refractive lens exchange, or simply staying with glasses/contacts is the better option.
  • All surgery carries risk. Common short-term effects are dry eye and night-vision halos that improve over weeks. Serious complications are uncommon. The Medical Director will discuss specific risks for your eyes during the consultation — informed consent is part of the workflow.
