What Cataract Plus is

Cataract Plus is for patients who want their cataract surgery to also reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses. The procedure itself takes about the same time as standard cataract surgery (~20 minutes per eye), but uses a more advanced platform and a more sophisticated lens.

ما هو؟

Cataract Plus is the femtosecond-laser-assisted variant of cataract surgery, combined with a multifocal intraocular lens (such as TECNIS Eyhance™). The femtosecond laser performs the corneal incision, capsulotomy, and lens fragmentation steps with sub-micron precision before the surgeon completes the lens removal and IOL insertion.

كيف يعمل

Where standard cataract surgery uses manual instruments for the corneal opening and ultrasound for the entire lens fragmentation, the Plus variant uses laser energy for the most precision-critical steps. Less ultrasound energy is used inside the eye overall. The multifocal IOL has multiple optical zones so the eye can focus at distance and at near simultaneously — most patients no longer need reading glasses.

الفوائد

Why upgrade to Cataract Plus

What the Plus variant offers over standard cataract surgery.

  • 01Multifocal vision

Distance and near vision in the same lens — most patients no longer need reading glasses.

  • 02Femtosecond laser-assisted

Laser performs the most precision-critical steps (corneal opening, capsulotomy, lens fragmentation).

  • 03Less ultrasound energy

Less energy is applied inside the eye overall.

  • 04TECNIS Eyhance™ IOL

Improved intermediate vision with 20/20 distance vision.

  • 05More predictable outcomes

Smaller, more precise laser incisions; better-centered IOL.

  • 06Same recovery timeline

Sight returns in hours; final vision at 4–6 weeks. Same as standard cataract surgery.

الإجراء

How cataract surgery is performed

A 20-minute outpatient procedure under local anesthetic.

الوقت الإجمالي ~20 minutes per eye

  1. 1

    Local anesthetic

Numbing eye drops, with optional IV sedation if you prefer to be more relaxed.

    المدة: 5 minutes

  2. 2

    Small corneal incision

A 2–3 mm incision is created at the edge of the cornea.

    المدة: 1 minute

  3. 3

    Capsulotomy

A small circular opening is made in the front capsule of the natural lens.

    المدة: 1 minute

  4. 4

    Phacoemulsification

An ultrasound probe gently breaks the cloudy lens into small pieces and suctions them out.

    المدة: 5–8 minutes

  5. 5

    IOL insertion

The folded artificial intraocular lens is inserted through the same small incision and unfolds inside the eye.

    المدة: 2 minutes

  6. 6

    Healing

No stitches. The incision self-seals. Antibiotic drops and discharge with companion.

    المدة: 5 minutes

Who Cataract Plus is right for

Cataract is not removed simply because it is present. Surgery is recommended when the cataract is materially affecting daily life.

مرشحون مناسبون

  • Patients with cataract who want to reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses
  • Active patients with refractive error in addition to the cataract
  • Patients comfortable with potential side effects of multifocal IOLs (mild halos around lights at night, which usually fade)
  • Patients who can attend the longer pre-op work-up (more measurements needed for multifocal lens choice)

قد لا يكون مناسباً

  • Patients with significant macular disease or retinal conditions that limit visual potential
  • Patients who do significant night driving and cannot tolerate any night-vision artifacts
  • Patients with very high astigmatism not suitable for multifocal IOLs (toric multifocal options available — discussed at consultation)

Cataract surgery is generally performed on one eye at a time, a few weeks apart, so the first eye can heal before the second is operated on. The consultation will explain timing and IOL options.

المخاطر والآثار الجانبية

Every surgery has risks. Here they are honestly.

Cataract Plus uses femtosecond-laser-assisted technique with a multifocal TECNIS Eyhance IOL — designed to reduce dependence on glasses across distance and intermediate. Risks include those of standard cataract surgery plus IOL-specific considerations.

شائع وقصير المدى

  • Mild irritation, watering, light sensitivity for the first days.
  • Halos or starbursts around lights at night while the brain neuro-adapts to the multifocal IOL — usually improves over weeks to months.
  • Slightly reduced contrast in low-light conditions compared to a monofocal IOL.
  • Need for several weeks of post-op drops (anti-inflammatory + antibiotic).

نادر لكن جدي

  • Posterior capsule opacification ("secondary cataract") — common in 1–3 years, treated by a brief YAG laser session.
  • IOL repositioning or exchange — rare; the multifocal optic depends on accurate centration, which is verified at follow-up.
  • Persistent macular swelling — uncommon, usually resolves with extended drops.
  • Retinal tear or detachment — rare, more common in highly myopic eyes.
  • Infection (endophthalmitis) — very rare; sterile single-use instruments + intraocular antibiotics.

A multifocal IOL is a lifestyle choice, not a medical indication. We discuss whether the night-vision trade-off is acceptable for you before recommending it. If it isn't, the standard Cataract Surgery package with a monofocal IOL remains available.

What patients can expect

Cataract Plus aims to reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses for most daily tasks. It is not a guarantee of glasses-free vision in every scenario — fine print or low-light reading may still benefit from a light reading prescription.

  1. Day of surgery

Functional within hours; blur and halos expected the same day.

  2. Day 1

Lens position confirmed at first post-op; vision improving.

  3. Week 1–4

Brain neuro-adapts to multifocal optics; halos at night reduce.

أسئلة شائعة

Patient questions about cataract surgery

  • Age is the biggest factor — cataract is one of the natural ways the eye lens changes over decades. Other contributors include diabetes, smoking, excessive alcohol use, prolonged UV exposure, and certain medications.
  • There is no rush simply because cataract is present. The right time is when the cataract is materially affecting daily life — driving has become difficult, reading is impaired, vision quality is worsening despite updated prescriptions. The consultation discusses timing.
  • Sight typically returns within a few hours of surgery. Vision improves quickly over the next 1–2 weeks and reaches its optimum at 4–6 weeks. New reading glasses (if needed) are usually prescribed at the 4–6 week check.
  • No. Cataract surgery is generally carried out on both eyes a few weeks apart so the first eye can heal before the second is operated on.
  • The operation is performed under local anesthetic — you will be awake but the eye is fully numbed and the procedure does not cause pain. Afterwards there can be itching, mild discomfort, or sensitivity to light for one to two days, controlled by the eye drops we send home with you.
  • With a standard monofocal IOL: yes, you will likely still need reading glasses. If freedom from reading glasses matters to you, ask about Cataract Plus (refractive cataract surgery) which uses a multifocal IOL.
  • Standard cataract surgery is performed manually for the incision and capsulotomy, with phacoemulsification for the lens. The IOL is monofocal — distance vision is restored, reading glasses still needed. Cataract Plus uses femtosecond laser for the precision steps and adds a multifocal IOL — most patients can read without glasses afterwards. The clinical risk profiles are similar; the upgrade is primarily about visual freedom.
  • Some patients see mild halos or "starburst" effects around point sources of light (e.g. headlights at night) for the first few months. This usually fades as the brain neuroadapts. If you do significant night driving and cannot tolerate any artifact, the consultation may recommend the standard monofocal IOL instead.
